WOLVERHAMPTON will have to make up a nine-point deficit in their quest to win the 2011 Elite Shield.

Wolves went down to a 52-43 first-leg defeat at Poole’s Wimborne Road on Wednesday evening, with Tai Woffinden showing some good form with a 13+1 haul.

Freddie Lindgren and Peter Karlsson both gave good backing with 12 and 9 respectively, but a lack of fire-power further down the order may yet prove costly.

The Pirates got off to the best possible start leading 10-2 after two heats, but with wins from the three big guns Wolves did edge it back to 17-13 after race 5.

A Chris Holder and Renat Gafurov maximum in heat 10 put Poole 39-29 ahead, but Lindgren’s tactical ride second place behind Davey Watt in heat 11 could only yield four points and a share race ensued.

A further Pirates 4-2 followed in heat 13, but with Woffinden’s double-point win in heat 14 keeps Wolves firmly in the contest for when they stage the decisive second-leg next month.

POOLE 52: Davey Watt 13, Chris Holder 11, Jason Doyle 9+2, Renat Gafurov 8+3, Dennis Andersson 7+1, Kyle Newman 4+2, Darcy Ward R/R

WOLVERHAMPTON 43: Tai Woffinden 13+1, Freddie Lindgren 12, Peter Karlsson 9, Ty Proctor 4, Ludvig Lindgren 3, Tyson Burmeister 1+1, Ricky Wells 1
