TAI Woffinden raced through the pain barrier and went agonisngly close to winning the British title on his home track at Wolverhampton on Monday.

Woffinden, racing with an injured shoulder after making a comeback earlier than expected, was in brilliant form in a sensational meeting in front of the Sky cameras.

But it was Swindon star Scott Nicholls who collected his sixth British title in a dramatic showdown.

Nicholls forced his way past great rival Chris Harris in a strong move on the second lap of a twice re-started Final, which also spelt despair for Woffinden.

The Wolves man had been unbeaten from the qualifying races, but there was further drama when all four competitors in the Final came to grief on the first bend.

When they tried again, Edward Kennett surged inside Woffinden on turn four only to fall and cause Woffinden to hit the fence, leading to Kennett’s disqualification.

But Woffinden missed out at the third time of asking with Harris, after a clear jump-start, then being outdone by Nicholls who also took the Wild Card for the British Grand Prix at Cardiff.

Said Woffinden: "I'm pleased with my performance but I missed out when it mattered most in the final and that's speedway.

"I'd like to thank my mum, my mechanic and my sponsors for all their support and I'm quite happy. I'll be back for the title next season!"
