WOLVES 52 SOMERSET 38

Monday May 14, 2018
WOLVERHAMPTON charged back to the top of the Premiership courtesy of a 52-38 win over Somerset at Monmore Green.

It maintained the Parrys International Wolves' unbeaten home record in 2018 with a fourth straight success.

The Monmore men worked their way into a six point lead with eight races gone, allowing the visitors to nominate World Champion Jason Doyle as a Tactical Substitute in Heat Nine.

But Rory Schlein and Cameron Heeps rode superbly on the opening couple of bends to shut the Somerset No.1 out before Jacob Thorsell and Kyle Howarth made it back-to-back 5-1s in the tenth as Wolves moved 14 clear in a vital mid-meeting spell.

They wrapped up the victory with two races to spare but Somerset headed into the last requiring a maximum of their own to walk away with something to show their efforts.

But in the second attempt, Doyle slid off while trying to round Thorssell ending any hopes of a consolation point.

Parrys International Wolves team boss Peter Adams said: "It was a very workmanlike performance I thought.

"Everybody contributed a little bit and with Swindon losing at Belle Vue it means we're back at the top of the league which is where we want to be."

Captain Rory Schlein top scored for a third successive home meeting despite his 15 race unbeaten run being brought to an end by Jack Holder in the penultimate heat of the night.

Jacob Thorssell bagged a second consecutive home score of 11 points while Cameron Heeps produced his best performance in Wolves colours to date.

Sam Masters and Kyle Howarth provided solid contributions while Nathan Greaves took the chequered flag in Heat Two following a spill from Somerset guest James Shanes.

Ashley Morris suffered horrendous bad luck throughout, including a puncture in his third outing, and battled much harder than his three points suggest.

The Parrys International Wolves head to Swindon on Thursday (May 17, 7.30) for the first of three away fixtures in the space of a week.

WOLVERHAMPTON 52: Rory Schlein 14, Jacob Thorssell 11+1, Cameron Heeps 7+1, Sam Masters 7, Kyle Howarth 6+2, Nathan Greaves 4+1, Ashley Morris 3+2.

SOMERSET 38: Jason Doyle 12, Richard Lawson 8, Jack Holder 6, Charles Wright 5+1, Bradley Wilson-Dean 4+1, Jake Allen 2+1, James Shanes 1.
