WOLVERHAMPTON kicked-off the defence of their Elite League crown with a narrow 47-43 defeat at Belle Vue on Good Friday.

The new-look Aces just had the all-round strength to hold off the Champions resistance, but the Wolves did gain a consolation league point despite the four-point loss.

Freddie Lindgren was top man for the Midlanders with 11 and Tai Woffinden backed him up with 8, but former Wolves favourite Peter Karlsson starred on his Belle Vue league debut with 10+1.

The Aces got off to the better start by opening up a 15-9 lead after four races, only for Lindgren and Ty Proctor to immediately hit back with a 5-1 in heat 5.

The Mancunians then steadily increased their advantage to 28-20 following race 8, but assisted by a 4-2 in heat 9 and a maximum from Joe Screen and Nicolai Klindt in heat 10, the gap was reduced to just two points.

Unfortunately Wolves hopes of snatching an away win were finished when Belle Vue 4-2s in heats 12 and 14 left them with a 45-39 lead with one race remaining.

Thankfully Peter Adams’ men didn’t return home empty handed as a 4-2 from Woffinden and Lindgren over Karlsson and Hans Andersen in the final race of the afternoon, was enough to secure their first league point of the season.

BELLE VUE 47: Peter Karlsson 10+1, James Wright 10, Leigh Lanham 9+3, Patrick Hougaard 8, Hans Andersen 6, William Lawson 3+2, Charlie Gjedde R/R

WOLVERHAMPTON 43: Freddie Lindgren 11, Tai Woffinden 8, Nicolai Klindt 7+1, Joe Screen 5, Ty Proctor 4+2, Joe Haines 4+1, Ludvig Lindgren 4
